Award-winning author and storyteller Dianne de Las Casas presents an evening of singing, clapping, laughing, and of course, storytelling.

Inspired by her seventh grade English teacher, who would read aloud to the class every day, de Las Casas “fell in love with words both on paper and in the air.” De Las Casas adapts traditional folklore, adding fun audience participation, song, and of course, humor. Visitors can pet a Hackney pony and visit with members of The Carriage and Driving Society of Greater Kansas City. Family histories are passed down in many ways, orally through songs and storytelling, or written, through poems and journals. Visitors will embark on a journey through their own family histories at First Sunday Family Fun Day from 12-4 p.m. Sunday, March 7. Families can learn and experiment with some of the different ways people have passed down their family histories, such as through oral histories and story quilts. Visitors can listen to story songs with singer Emily Tummons in the StoryTarium as well as create their own family history journal and start recording their family histories in the Museum’s Visitor Center.

Quilting: Then and Now features three contemporary quilters of note from the Kansas City area: Ned'Ra Bonds, Kim Eichler-Messmer and Sherry Whetstone. The Exhibit will also have a historical poster show of Civil War quilts with anti-slavery themes. The 5:00 to 8:00 pm opening will give the public the opportunity to talk to the artists, as well as experience hands-on quilting activities lead by Ned'Ra and Sherry. Kim will have a second exhibit area in her studio adjacent to the gallery, in the Pressroom Studios. She will be on hand in her studio to discuss her work. Following will be Bram Wynands on jazz piano from 5:00 to 6:00 and last but certainly not least, Dave Panico, “The Soaring Saxman”, will conclude on the saxophone.

Original and reproduction art featuring local artists will be on display and for sale from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m.

The Heart of America Model A Ford Club will provide a car show for our guests from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m.

The Nimble Thimbles “A stitch In Time” quilt display will be on display in the Mansion not only during the Pig Roast but the whole month of September.

The ever popular silent auction will be held on the grounds of the Estate.

The Carriage House Gift Shop will be open with jewelry, purses, scarves and other great gift items for you or for others.

The menu features ribs from Savage B-B-Q, Chicken Tambucca, Corn Casserole, Pecan Sweet Potato Soufflé and many, many other tasty treats including dessert and as always, we are grateful to Lipton Tea for providing beverages.

A “Friends of Library Member Only” Preview Sale will be held on Wednesday, November 3, from 6 to 9 p.m. which requires a current Friends of the Library membership card that may be purchased at the sale or at the Friends Used book stores located at Antioch and Blue Valley Neighborhood libraries.

According to Marsha Bennett, Community Relations Coordinator for Johnson County Library, this new sale be similar in size and scope of the Library’s Sizzlin’ Summer Used Book which was held in June at Metcalf South that raised over $83,000.00.

“We are delighted to offer another large regional book sale for the community,” Bennett stated. “There is definitely something for every age and interest. We estimate there will be approximately 100,000 items, all organized in easy to find categories. We have outgrown our space for quarterly used book sales previously held at the Antioch Neighborhood Library, so have moved to two semi-annual sales. Metcalf South offers a larger space and plenty of parking.”

According to Bennett this is a great community recycling event and a way to stock up on winter reading material. “Not only are items weeded from the library’s collection taken to the sale, but donations from the community make up about 60 to 70% of the items offered at the sale,” Bennett said. “Books and audiovisual materials are sorted by categories so people can easily find their area of interest or favorite authors. There are hardbacks, paperbacks, fiction and nonfiction, children’s books, as well as some audiovisual materials. The variety of items offered at this sale will certainly please everyone. And the prices are very affordable.”

Dark Matter announces its inaugural performance, entitled Orbit, at Union Station's Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium. Dark Matter is a collaboration of composers, performers, and scientists. It fuses cutting-edge technology with exceptional musical artistry. The result is an art form that blurs the boundaries between performance, education, and composition by blending them into an event produced at one of the largest stardomes in the country.

Experience the beauty of the cosmos with an incredible journey into space. Astronomer Bob Riddle will guide you through the solar system and beyond while original electro-acoustic music gives you the feeling of weightlessness. Composers Daniel Eichenbaum and Richard Johnson collaborate with performers Rebecca Ashe and Cheryl Melfi to create live music under the Gottlieb Planetarium's sixty-foot dome. Presented in full-screen projection with surround-sound, Dark Matter is an audio-visual treat audiences won't soon forget.

Orbit is an entirely original production created by the members of Dark Matter and is suitable for all audiences. These performances are supported in part by an Inspiration Grant from the Metropolitan Arts Council of Kansas City. Dark Matter is also sponsored by the HMS Beagle, Kansas City's ultimate science store. The docents of the Historic Oxford Schoolhouse will host an engaging and educational program on Saturday, April 16^th beginning at 10:00 am at the Historic Oxford Schoolhouse located in Ironwoods Park at 147^th & Mission Road, Leawood, Kansas 66224.

Drew Bodner will begin the lecture with an introductory overview about the Historic Western Trails that passed through this area. A comprehensive examination of the medical practices and medicines used on the Western Trails will be presented by Dr. Pete Cuppage.

After retiring from the University of Kansas Medical Center, Dr. Cuppage has focused his energies on his interests in medical history and the frontier medicines of the Western Trails. Cuppage will share his passion in period costume with his portable cabinet of medicines.

It's 1965 and Ponyboy Curtis belongs to a lower-class group of Oklahoma youths who call themselves greasers. Walking home from a movie, Ponyboy is attacked by a group of Socs, short for Socials, a rival gang that threaten to cut him. So begins this impactful tale by S.E. Hinton, who wrote this landmark work as a teen in Tulsa.

The Socs jump greasers like Ponyboy and his friend Johnny for fun. When Johnny kills a Soc who was beating the two of them up, the pair goes into hiding. As Pony's world crumbles, it teaches him that pain feels the same whether a soc or a greaser.

light for comfort. But who should Little Red meet on her journey through the grass but the Big, Bad Frog!

A cast of hand puppet bugs, including Dr. Pillbug, Little Red’s Mama, and a collection of critters on their way to a fancy
dress bug ball, illustrate a lively tale loosely based on the classic story of Little Red Riding Hood.

Original songs set to vintage honky tonk piano music will make you “buggy” with delight.

WaterFire Kansas City 2011

Designed by award-winning artist Barnaby Evans, WaterFire Kansas City is a unique, multi-sensory experience of music, fire and water. Now in its third year, the moving art installation features more than 55 floating bonfires on Brush Creek. This year's festivities will take place October 22nd 2011.

WaterFire was originally created by Barnaby Evans in 1994 on the three rivers of downtown Providence, Rhode Island. The living fire sculpture has become a signature event for the city, attracting more than 10 million visitors and drawing praise as a moving symbol of Providence’s renaissance.

The event begins with a series of boats that travel along Brush Creek through the darkness. They make their way with torches a flame in an enchanting display to ignite the braziers and bring all 55 pieces to life. Throughout the evening, boats return to the braziers, constantly feeding them with new wood and keeping the sculpture in its original form for the duration of the evening.

This powerful visual is reinforced by the fragrant scent of aromatic wood smoke, the flickering firelight on the anchored bridges, the silhouettes of the fire-tenders passing by the flames, the torch-lit vessels traveling down the creek, and the enchanting music. Food will be available for purchase from four Plaza restaurants.

Unlike Halloween, the Day of the Dead is not a scary day. It’s a day to remember and celebrate the lives of our loved ones who have gone from us. Home altars are decorated with pictures, flowers, food and candy. One of the traditional decorations are hard candy sugar skulls. And they’re fun to decorate.

Charles Dickens' classic gets the full Broadway treatment by the Broadway team of Alan Menken ("Beauty and the Beast," "Little Mermaid,"), Lynn Ahrens ("Ragtime," "Seussical") and Mike Okrent ("Crazy For You," "Me and My Girl.") Called by The New York Times "a tonic for adults, and for children a transfixing journey," this spectacular musical extravaganza ran for ten years at Madison Square Garden, complete with falling snow, exuberant dances by famed choreographer Susan Stroman, flying ghosts and a magnificent set which recreated the streets, graveyards, homes and buildings of Dickensian London. In 2004, this version became the basis of an NBC Hallmark Entertainment special (teleplay adaptation by Lynn Ahrens) featuring Kelsey Grammer as Scrooge, and an array of stars including Jason Alexander, Jesse L. Martin, Jane Krakowski, Geraldine Chaplin, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Ruthie Henshall. Citizens in Kansas City, Missouri will join thousands of individuals across the country to celebrate National Preservation Month this May. “Celebrating America’s Treasures” is the theme of the month-long celebration sponsored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Since the National Trust for Historic Preservation created Preservation Week in 1971 to spotlight grassroots preservation efforts in America, it has grown into an annual celebration observed by small towns and big cities with events ranging from architectural and historic tours and award ceremonies, to fundraising events, educational programs and heritage travel opportunities. Due to its overwhelming popularity, in 2005, the National Trust for Historic Preservation extended the celebration to the entire month of May and declared it Preservation Month to provide an even longer opportunity to celebrate the diverse and unique heritage of our country’s cities and states and enable more Americans to become involved in the growing preservation movement.

Here in Kansas City Preservation Month 2012 will be observed by the 1855 Harris-Kearney House Museum at 4000 Baltimore hosting a free, open-house for the public on Sunday, May 20, 2012 from 1-4 PM. The open-house will offer opportunities for Kansas Citians to celebrate the preservation of a local historical treasure that chronicles our local and regional development. The open-house is co-sponsored by the Westport Historical Society and Park University’s Program of History.

The 1855 Harris-Kearney House Museum (www.westporthistorical.org) is a non-profit historic site. The Colonel John Harris family migrated from Kentucky in 1832 and settled in the West Port area. Their first home consisted of a four room log house on a farmstead located on the site of present day 39th Street and Gillham Road. John prospered and became the proprietor of The Harris House Hotel in West Port. In 1855, John and his wife Henrietta built a two-story, all brick, Greek revival house "on a ridge just east of town." The grand home was known as the "Mansion House." The bricks for the mansion were made on the premises. Originally, Colonel Harris' mansion stood on 5 acres of land at the southwest corner of the intersection of present day Westport Road and Main Street. In 1922, the house was moved in two sections to its current location which was, in earlier years, part of the Gottfried Homung’s vineyard. The Westport Historical Society acquired the home in 1976 and restored the original 1855 portion of the house as a house museum. The museum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was designated by the National Parks Department as an official site on the Santa Fe Trail.

First Sunday Family Fun Day: Record your Own History

Family histories are passed down in many ways, orally through songs and storytelling, or written, through poems and journals. Visitors will embark on a journey through their own family histories at First Sunday Family Fun Day from 12-4 p.m. Sunday, June 3 at the Museum. Families can learn and experiment with some of the different ways people have passed down their family histories, such as through oral histories and story quilts. Visitors can create their own family history journals and start recording their family histories, design a cave drawing and so much more!

STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL at the Vaile Mansion

More than 62 flats of strawberries, served in shortcake, ice cream, and floats will be ready to go at the Vaile Mansion Strawberry Fest for Sat. June 2, from 9 am to 4 pm. Bargain hunters will be searching the more than 100 booths for antiques, crafts and flowering plants. If you are still hungry you can nibble on hot dogs, turkey sandwiches, soft drinks, and kettle corn. The children’s corner offers crafts for kids.

Free entertainment includes live fiddle, accordion and dulcimer music, ballet, The Spirit of Independence Concert Band and the 1859 Missouri Town Dancers. Hop on a carriage ride ($5.00,$3.00 children) and explore the Vaile Mansion ($6.00 adults, $3.00 children). Avoid headaches by taking the free shuttle from William Chrisman High School.
