Charlotte Street Foundation?s Urban Culture Project is pleased to present Cumulus, a multi-media, multi-disciplinary exhibition featuring select projects developed by current Urban Culture Project Studio Residents. The exhibition?s call for proposals encouraged studio residents to ?consider collaboration or interactivity in the making and /or presentation of the work.? The open nature of the call resulted in a dynamic group of proposals whose structures are inherently generous ? offering room for audience participation, inviting the response of peers, and directly giving ?gifts? to visitors of the exhibition. As a cumulus cloud gathers mass between opposing wind currents, Cumulus seeks to harvest exchange, hybrid design, and spontaneous expression through a mounting creative momentum.

"Creative Photography ~ A Demystification of the Basics"

The workshop concentrates on the basics of exposure, the elements of design and composition as they apply to Creative Photography. "We really focus on Learning to See” by removing expectations and barriers that constrict awareness; this allows the participant to discover a world of endless image opportunities” said Rose. We apply the morning lessons in the afternoon shoot and follow with peer feedback and instructor critique. As a bonus, at the end of the day, ALL participants take home their own frame-able printed Fine Art Photograph created during the workshop. This workshop is especially helpful for those who feel their photography is restricted by their locale.

Artwork by 98 candidates for the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the Kansas City Art Institute will be on view in the “2010 B.F.A. Exhibition” from April 17 to May 15 at the H&R Block Artspace at KCAI, 16 E. 43rd St. A closing reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 14. In connection with the exhibition, art history and creative writing students will read from “Compendium 2010,” an anthology of their writings and images, at noon Friday, May 14.

With work installed throughout the Artspace — in the main gallery and also on the upper level — this invitational exhibition will include work from all departments at KCAI, including animation, art history, ceramics, creative writing, digital filmmaking, fiber, graphic design, interdisciplinary arts, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture.

Event Horizons is a touring program of new work by film, video, and new media artists Thomas Comerford (Chicago), and Sabine Gruffat & Bill Brown (Madison, Wisconsin). The one-night event will run approximately two hours.

This program includes a screening of Comerford’s The Indian Boundary Line, which follows a road in Chicago, Rogers Avenue, that traces the 1816 Treaty of St. Louis boundary between the United States and “Indian Territory.” In doing so, it examines the collision between the vernacular landscape and the symbolic one, and it suggests how this land and its history are an index for the shifting inhabitants, relationships, boundaries and ideas of landscape — as well as the consequences — that have accompanied the transformation of the “New World.”

Also featured is Gruffat & Brown’s Time Machine, a multimedia live performance in which the artists explore new ways of telling stories with technologies both cutting edge and obsolete, including slide projector, analog video switcher, record player, digital video projector, and computer. During the performance, the stage becomes the control panel for an immense ship and the projection screen a window through which different spaces and times are visualized, as Gruffat and Brown assume the role of space-time tourists driven by an exploratory urge.

Community + Loneliness examines the conflict between desire for community and lifestyle and personal choices that undermine the fulfillment of this desire. The exhibition features artists whose work expresses a sense of loneliness stemming from isolation from or within a community, as well as works that speak to community identification and attempts toward community building. Ned'Ra Bonds Sherry Whetstone Kim Eichler-Messmer

Quilting: Then and Now features three contemporary quilters of note from the Kansas City area: Ned'Ra Bonds, Kim Eichler-Messmer and Sherry Whetstone. The Exhibit will also have a historical poster show of Civil War quilts with anti-slavery themes. The 5:00 to 8:00 pm opening will give the public the opportunity to talk to the artists, as well as experience hands-on quilting activities lead by Ned'Ra and Sherry. Kim will have a second exhibit area in her studio adjacent to the gallery, in the Pressroom Studios. She will be on hand in her studio to discuss her work. Dark Matter announces its inaugural performance, entitled Orbit, at Union Station's Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium. Dark Matter is a collaboration of composers, performers, and scientists. It fuses cutting-edge technology with exceptional musical artistry. The result is an art form that blurs the boundaries between performance, education, and composition by blending them into an event produced at one of the largest stardomes in the country.

Experience the beauty of the cosmos with an incredible journey into space. Astronomer Bob Riddle will guide you through the solar system and beyond while original electro-acoustic music gives you the feeling of weightlessness. Composers Daniel Eichenbaum and Richard Johnson collaborate with performers Rebecca Ashe and Cheryl Melfi to create live music under the Gottlieb Planetarium's sixty-foot dome. Presented in full-screen projection with surround-sound, Dark Matter is an audio-visual treat audiences won't soon forget.

Orbit is an entirely original production created by the members of Dark Matter and is suitable for all audiences. These performances are supported in part by an Inspiration Grant from the Metropolitan Arts Council of Kansas City. Dark Matter is also sponsored by the HMS Beagle, Kansas City's ultimate science store. "There’s always another side to the way we view.
There’s always another way to view the side that we can see.
Within a side, stability grows with time and awareness.
Between multiple sides, mobility rests within space and willingness.
When we examine our view, it is often more insightful of who we are than what we can see.

My artwork is a balancing act that mimics my meditation. The paintings have two parallel circular sides emerging in tandem with one another. The colors and forms cross reference and play with the viewers memory as only one horizon can be seen at a time. The work is displayed in windows so that there is an external and internal view. During the opening and by appointment, the internal work can be seen. Over the course of the show, the paintings will flip and seemingly change sequence while revealing to the outside viewer the interior side of the work."

Local electronic group SanSalvador will be performing at the opening reception.
John will be presenting on "Creativity and Sustainability" during the closing on June 17th along with a tasting by Oddly Correct Coffee.

Grand Arts is pleased to announce the upcoming project, New Cornucopia and The Big IOU by sculptor John Salvest. New Cornucopia and The Big IOU consists of two separate but related artworks: IOU/USA, a temporary public monument in Memorial Hill/Penn Valley Park, and New Cornucopia, a sculpture at Grand Arts.

Towering over visitors at a height of almost seven stories, IOU/USA is comprised of 105 multi-colored steel shipping containers, stacked seven high and fifteen across. The containers will be used as mosaic tesserae, with “I O U” spelled out on one side of the massive structure, and “U S A” on the other. Developed over the course of the past year, this striking installation is unfolding in Kansas City at a moment of exceptionally divisive national politics and public discourse. Says Salvest of IOU/USA:

“The placement of the project near a regional branch of the Federal Reserve Bank, one of the main components of national economic policy, comes at a time when concern about the United States’ ballooning federal budget and foreign trade deficits is a major part of the national conversation. Its location between the Fed and the Pioneer Mother Memorial is also fitting in that, whereas the permanent public monument rightfully celebrates America’s and Kansas City’s triumphant past, the temporary public sculpture may generate meaningful discussion about where we, as a nation, are heading.”

Grand Arts Artistic Director and project curator Stacy Switzer describes how the project is designed to embrace a multiplicity of viewpoints:

“While some may interpret its site and orientation in proximity to the Kansas City Federal Reserve as a direct critique aimed at the activities of the central bank, others may view the project as a cathartic response—perhaps defiant, perhaps submissive—to the stresses of mounting personal debt which millions of us know intimately. Of course neither of these takes is exclusive of another, and activists of most any persuasion could read the work as a rallying cry for their own ideals. This multivalence is what makes IOU/USA so potent as a work of art in the public sphere.”

At Grand Arts, New Cornucopia will feature a single shipping container with its contents spilling out into the gallery space. Harkening back to Flemish still life paintings of the 17^th century, New Cornucopia offers a revised vision of plentitude and decay for our era of globalized trade.

Details

Installation of IOU/USA at Memorial Hill Park will begin August 15, 2011, and the project will open to the public on Friday, September 2, 2011 at 6pm. Thereafter, the installation will be accessible to visitors 24 hours a day, seven days a week through October 16, 2011.

New Cornucopia will open on Friday, September 2 at 6pm, and can be viewed thereafter during regular gallery hours, Th-F 10am-5pm, and Sat 11am-5pm.

ARTIST BIO

John Salvest's work has been presented in exhibitions throughout the United States, including one-person exhibitions at New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York; Phoenix Art Museum; Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis; Salina Art Center, Salina, Kansas; Brooks Museum of Art, Memphis and many more. Salvest is the recipient of numerous awards and grants including National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships in 1991 and 1993 and a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in 1998. He has completed public art projects for the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts in Memphis and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, among others. The Cannon Center project was cited as one of the country’s best public art projects by Americans for the Arts Public Art Network’s 2004 Public Art Year in Review. His work has been reviewed and featured in publications such as Art in America, The New York Times, The Village Voice, Sculpture, Art Papers, The New Art Examiner and more.

John Salvest is Professor of Sculpture at Arkansas State University. He is represented by Morgan Lehman Gallery, New York; Rudolph Blume Fine Art, Houston; and Endemica Gallery, Rome, Italy.

Little Red Riding Bug is on her way with a basket of goodies to visit her Granny, who flew a little too close to a bug
light for comfort. But who should Little Red meet on her journey through the grass but the Big, Bad Frog!

A cast of hand puppet bugs, including Dr. Pillbug, Little Red’s Mama, and a collection of critters on their way to a fancy
dress bug ball, illustrate a lively tale loosely based on the classic story of Little Red Riding Hood.

Original songs set to vintage honky tonk piano music will make you “buggy” with delight.

Designed by award-winning artist Barnaby Evans, WaterFire Kansas City is a unique, multi-sensory experience of music, fire and water. Now in its third year, the moving art installation features more than 55 floating bonfires on Brush Creek. This year's festivities will take place October 22nd 2011.

WaterFire was originally created by Barnaby Evans in 1994 on the three rivers of downtown Providence, Rhode Island. The living fire sculpture has become a signature event for the city, attracting more than 10 million visitors and drawing praise as a moving symbol of Providence’s renaissance.

The event begins with a series of boats that travel along Brush Creek through the darkness. They make their way with torches a flame in an enchanting display to ignite the braziers and bring all 55 pieces to life. Throughout the evening, boats return to the braziers, constantly feeding them with new wood and keeping the sculpture in its original form for the duration of the evening.

This powerful visual is reinforced by the fragrant scent of aromatic wood smoke, the flickering firelight on the anchored bridges, the silhouettes of the fire-tenders passing by the flames, the torch-lit vessels traveling down the creek, and the enchanting music. Food will be available for purchase from four Plaza restaurants.
